The Pre-Schoolers spent most of this Sunday’s class learning about Sukkot. We began the day by greeting one another with last month’s new word- Shalom. We then learned the new Hebrew word of the month- Toda- meaning Thank You. We tried to use this word often throughout the day and I encouraged the students to say “toda” to their families when they got home!
To learn about Sukkot, the students were given packets of activities and information on the holiday. We worked on some of the pages in the packets together and the students took them home to continue to learn. We talked about some important objects that have to do with Sukkot, such as the etrog, the llulav, and the sukkah. We colored a page with those objects to help them learn what each of those things look like. We also talked about what you would need to build a sukkah and what would go inside the sukkah and did pages in the Sukkot packet to learn those things.
Next, we created our own Sukkot objects. I brought in a lemon to symbolize the etrog and we created a lullav out of different types of branches together. We picked which one to put together and the students colored what would become the handle. The class then built a mini-sukkah together. We used a large cardboard box, branches and leaves for the roof and decoration, and markers to draw different fruits.
The activity that the students enjoyed the most, however, was making our very own edible sukkahs! We used graham crackers, peanut butter, raisins, and pretzels to create the sukkahs that we ate for snack. They were fun and delicious!
