Like many other Jews in the modern world, we in Or Emet are secular. Although we are non-theistic, we are proudly Jewish and value what we have in common with all other Jews. And like a great many Jews and non-Jews, we embrace humanism, along with our Jewish heritage, as an important source of values and ethics. These elements (secularism, cultural Judaism, and humanism) come together in Humanistic Judaism, offering an alternative in contemporary Jewish life.

Or Emet’s Mission is to be a caring and stimulating community celebrating humanistic Judaism. Humanistic Judaism embraces a human-centered philosophy that combines rational thinking with the celebration of Jewish culture and identity.

Or Emet welcomes all who identify with the history and culture of the Jewish people and with the principles of Humanistic Judaism. The congregation offers a humanistic Jewish alternative for those who wish to celebrate Judaism in a creative and continually evolving community that includes single individuals, intercultural families and children of all ages.

Or Emet (the Minnesota Congregation for Humanistic Judaism) is an affiliate of the Society for Humanistic Judaism (SHJ), an international movement based in Detroit, Michigan, which has affiliates in North and South America, Israel, Europe and Australia.

In 1963 Sherwin Wine founded the Birmingham Temple in suburban Detroit, the first congregation of Humanistic Judaism. In 1969 he helped establish the Society for Humanistic Judaism. He also helped to create the International Federation of Secular Humanistic Jews, a worldwide association of national organizations. Rabbi Wine was selected Humanist of the Year for 2003 by the American Humanist Association.
